Women in Jazz (WinJazz) is an international project created and directed by the Italian association, Mulab, and funded by the MIBACT – Ministry of Culture of Italy – in order to promote the growth and the mobility of young women jazz musicians in Europe. The project aims to stimulate and promote the integration of women in a male-dominated sector as the jazz world still is in Italy.  It also aims to improve opportunities and creative sharing in different countries within the European Community, expanding on the best Jazz showcasing opportunities that each region offers. Therefore, during November and December 2015, the tour of Italian female jazz musicians will take place in Rome (It), Rijeka (Croatia), London (UK) and Katowice (Poland) in cooperation with partners from the countries concerned: Prostor Plus, Collage Arts and Arteria Fundacja.

Women in Jazz project is realized by Mulab (It) in partnership with Prostor Plus (HR), Collage Arts (GB) te Fundacja ARTeria (PL),  funded by Italian Ministry of Culture - MIBACT.

Women in Jazz Festival in Rijeka (HR) is realized in cooperation with Rijeka's 24th international jazz festival - Jazz Time Rijeka 2015, funded by Croatian Ministry of Culture. Women in Jazz artist talk is realized in cooperation with Book Caffe Dnevni boravak.

Women in Jazz Festival is part of audience development programme Spaces supported by City of Rijeka within the Kamov Residency programme in cooperation with MMSU, HNK Ivan pl. Zajc and City of Rijeka.

Prostor Plus is supported by Zaklada Kultura nova. SU Molekula is the manager of the Filodrammatica, Marganovo and Palach.

Women in Jazz Festival

In organization of Prostor Plus, Women in Jazz Festival will take place in Rijeka from 11th till 13th of November, 2015. The Festival will bring five performances of impressive Italian female jazz bands in a large hall of Filodrammatica and HKD Sušak, promoting the excellence of female musicians in the field of jazz. 

Famous Italian female jazz artists will perform with their bands and present their current projects: a distinctive interpreter Monica Demure (vocals) will present with Christian Calcagnile their Blastula duet, Milena Angelè (saxophone) her lyrical project Resiliency which set off her career marked from the beginnings with her diverse musical influences, Silvia Bolognesi (contrabass) with trumpeter Angelo Olivieri their Dialogue duet, Cecilia Sanchietti (percussion) will present a kind of philosophy of group round playing with Circle Time, and Federica Zammarchi (vocals) in Jazz Oddity her jazz journey with earlier oeuvre of David Bowie.

A special addition to performances by Cecilia Sanchietti and Milena Angelè will be an interdisciplinary cooperation of female musicians with contemporary dancers on the theme Improvisations that incurred as a result of the residency workshop organized by the Prostor Plus educators Lela Kaplowitz, Kate Foley and Ivana Kalc. Lela Kaplowitz will appear as a guest performer on Monica Demure Blastula duet at her HKD Sušak concert, which takes place in cooperation with the Rijeka's 24th international jazz festival - Jazz Time Rijeka 2015. Federica Zammarchi will be joined by vocalist Laura Taglialatela as a winner of WinJazz Competition held in Rome as part of the Women in Jazz Project.

Prostor Plus, Association for the Performing Arts

Prostor Plus is an association for performing arts from Rijeka that provides dance and physical theatre artists with training and performance opportunities. Since there are no higher education institutions for contemporary dance and physical theater in Croatia, Prostor Plus offers site-specific performances, lectures and film screenings to local audiences. Over the past last eleven years, this association has literally seeded the performing arts scene with artists, programs and productions displayed at some of the most important festivals in Croatia.
