Suvi Solkio

Suvi Solkio (née Aarnio, b. 1978) is a multidisciplinary  artist from Finland. Whether it is gathering together for an embroidery workshop, using one’s body as a site for a political spectacle or creating a collective monument , her work celebrates the experience-based expertise, the D-I-Y culture and highlights the similarities that bind us together, despite the diverse backgrounds. Since receiving B.A in 2001, she has worked as an artist, curator and producer for e.g. Wäinö Aaltonen Art Museum, Lönnström Art Museum, Raumars A.I.R program, the city of Turku and Turku European Capital of Culture 2011 foundation. During years 2015-2018 she holds the position as a regional art counselor at the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

Misliti zajednicu

Suvi Solkio will participate in the Misliti zajednicu (eng. Thinking Community) program which is part of the Građani svom gradu platform (eng. From the Citizens to Their City). The program will be held in Rijeka at Kamov Studio (March 20 – 28). The backbone of the program are guest performances of three Finnish artists - Pia Bartsch, Suvi Sinikka Solkio and Martii Tuomaala who collaborate with Finnish Kone Foundation which deals with social and artistic practices (so called community art). Bartsh, Solki and Tuomaala will run a student workshop and present their work. From the Citizens to Their City is the name of an open and growing community that gathers protagonists from artistic, cultural and educational circles of Rijeka. The name is taken from a wall plaque that bears the inscription From the Citizens to Their City / Rijeka 1983. This plaque, one of the many plaques of this kind in Rijeka, stands at the very beginning of Križanićeva Street. It speaks about a voluntary engagement by people who are our neighbors today, by people who used to live here – by the citizens of Rijeka, in the creation of common good. 
From the Citizens to Their City is a platform for mediation of artistic, cultural and educational programs, whose objective is to improve the development and cohesion of Rijeka's art scene on the national and international level, as well as to enlarge the audience and develop their cultural and artistic interests and engagement. The platform aims to support art productions that meet the specific needs of communities and public space, thereby developing strategies of community art practices on the local level. In the framework of mediation and production programs, the platform From the Citizens to Their City includes activities such public lectures, workshops, open discussions, art interventions in the city, exhibitions, publications, international and national collaborations… From the Citizens to Their City promotes the principles of openness, solidarity, participation, inclusion and interdisciplinarity, and supports the revitalization of the idea of community by producing an authentic artistic and interdisciplinary discourse.

The platform From the Citizens to Their City is created with the support from the Canadian foundation Musagetes and the Rijeka Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and uses the space of Kamov Studio in Križanićeva Street as its base.
