  Shanna Maurizi is an artist and experimental filmmaker living and working in Brooklyn, New York. Her work is concerned with the scope of the unknown and how we attempt to understand it, realized in drawing, altered photographs and collage, and short film and video. Her work has been exhibited widely and her films have garnered festival awards and screened at Anthology Film Archives, Craig Baldwin’s Other Cinema, SF Cinematheque, and the Ende Tymes Festival, among many others. Her photo-based work has been exhibited at Famous Accountants, Observatory, Gallery 825 Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, the Rotterdam Kunsthal and Popp’s Packing in Detroit, among many others. Her most recent solo show Dark Space, was at Songs for Presidents in New York.

  During her stay in Rijeka, Shanna Maurizi will be working on a new experimental film which employs the methods of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau to see the invisible, imagine the unknown, and establish a relationship with the contents of the void. Shot in caves with infra-red and underwater cinematography, the project integrates a childhood spent watching 1970’s nature documentaries and an interest in situating science in an unquantifiable context.

  Following the directives of an "ocean explorer", she will be learning to scuba dive in order to film underwater, visiting the Krizna Jama cave to film in infra-red in order to see what is invisible, to see in a place of darkness, examining "specimens" with a microscope and searching for "sunken treasure".

  Peppered throughout the film ouvre of Jacques Cousteau are philosophical musings quite out of character with a nature documentary. This was the inspiration to develop a unique narration for the film which she hopes will incorporate writings from emerging Croatian writers and be translated in English and Croatian. Rather than telling the viewer what they are seeing and how to understand it, it will open up the images and take us to surprising new places.

   The project is organized by Brooklyn Arts Council, with help from Other Cinema in San Francisco and a gear sponsorship from Blackmagic Design.
