• Matija Ferlin

  Born in Pula in 1982, Matija Ferlin is a director, choreographer and performer. He graduated from the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam and subsequently lived and worked in Berlin and Toronto. After returning to Pula (Croatia), he focused on the development of novel concepts for stage performances, collaborating both with actors and dancers. Matija Ferlin’s work has been shown at internationally renowned festivals including Kunstenfestivaldesarts (Brussels), ImPulsTanz (Vienna), Festival TransAmériques (Montreal) or BITEF (Belgrade). He collaborates with choreographers, film and theatre directors, visual artists and dramaturgs, such as Ivica Buljan, Christophe Chemin, Maja Delak, Goran Ferčec, Mauricio Ferlin, Ame Henderson, Mateja Koležnik, Sasha Waltz, Jasna Žmak and many others.

  Songs from Captivity

  The composer Luigi Dallapiccola was born in 1904 in Istria. During World War I, he was interned in Graz along with his family and later went on to study piano in Florence and establish the twelve-tone technique of the Second Viennese School in Italy. Between 1938 and 1941, under the impact of Mussolini’s tyranny, he composed his three Songs from Captivity. Based on a prayer from Stefan Zweig’s Maria Stuart, an excerpt from The Consola­tion of Philosophy by Boethius and the psalm In Te Domine Speravi by Girolamo Savonarola, Dallapiccola created an atonal cry against fascism that transcends time.
  In a collaboration with the vocal ensemble Cantando Admont, the ten musicians of PHACE and five actors, the Croatian choreographer Matija Ferlin and the dramaturge and writer Goran Ferčec present a stage production of the three songs as three scenic images. And, just as they did in 2021 with Sad Sam Matthäus, they are adopting and adapting a first-person autofiction approach to the plot and the narrative. An evening dedicated to the human need for freedom.

  Croatian Cultural Centre in Sušak (HKD)

  HKD is a public cultural institution that hosts numerous cultural, educational and entertainment programs throughout the year with dance, drama, music, film and multimedia activities, as well as visual arts in the Kortil Gallery. Kortil has been operating as an exhibition space since 1997, with exhibition program open to contemporary domestic and foreign artists, applied art, for exhibitions of artists who marked the art of the 20th century, but at the same time for young authors who are just entering the art scene.  

  HKD hosts educational programs with dance, drama and music workshops and training for children and young people. It also implements community programs such as Kortil live and has its own volunteering program.

  HKD is a member of the European dance networks Aerowaves and Pan-Adria and the music/organizational network MOST Music.
