  Kristina Borg was born in 1987 in Malta, where she lives and works. In her transdisciplinary research practice, she spends time integrating into specific multispecies communities and devotes her attention to the dialogue between such communities – human and more-than-human – and the place. Her work focuses on the co-creation of projects that are situation and context-specific, and involves diverse, experiential processes that relate to socio-political, economic, feminist and environmental issues in urban-collective spaces, ranging from a city to a supermarket, from a walkway by the sea to an agricultural field. Kristina’s work has been presented at numerous venues including: La Maternitat, Historical Archive of the Barcelona Provincial Council, Barcelona (2024), In-Situ Pendle, UK (2023), the European Horizon 2020 research and innovation project AMASS – Acting on the Margins: Arts as Social Sculpture, with a concluding exhibition at Spazju Kreattiv, Malta (2021), Centro Municipal de Arte Hélio Oiticica, Brazil (2019), Nieuwe Vide, The Netherlands (2017), and others. She also received numerous awards and nominations, and most recently she was selected as a finalist for the New European Bauhaus Prizes 2023 with her project You Are What You Buy – Reap What You Sow. Kristina is also a fellow of the Salzburg Global Forum for Cultural Innovators and a member of the international Community Economies Research Network.

• Moving on_Moving with_Water Bodies (working title)

  I see this residency as an extension of my current sabbatical year, during which I’ve made multiple attempts to slow down, but with little success due to various external factors. I hope this residency will allow me to slow down, reflect on and revisit my artistic and research processes. My intention is to engage with water and its flows, and explore how they connect to or reshape the concepts of land and agricultural practices from one of my previous projects. I hope that this residency would help me refine some of my current research questions as I stand at a point of transition – transition that may transform into a process-based journey, potentially blossoming into a more extensive project related to port cities and islands in the Mediterranean region. This journey aims to engage more specifically with the experience of women and their relationship with water, the sea, and the immediate environments. What are the effects of water moving within and with our bodies? Women have often been compared to water as a source of nourishment and a shelter; they have often been described as primary users of water through tasks such as cleaning and cooking. Like water, women have been commodified and exploited. As water flows, transforms, twists, and turns, women are also often hailed for their adaptability. But what happens if women refuse to adapt to the privileged and patriarchal dominance, especially within the context of port cities? What opportunities arise within these challenges? How do we, as women, reclaim ourselves by listening to, walking alongside and rethinking our connection with water? How can water empower women’s rights, and, similarly, how can women empower the right to water and the rights of water alike?

   

        

   

• Art Explora, The Island Club and MMSU

  Art Explora is an international foundation that inspires new encounters between arts and audiences – locally, nationally and internationally.

  As one of the activities of the Art Explora Festival, a Mediterranean Crossed Residency Programme has been launched in partnership with the Island Club. Conceived as a platform for exchanges and narratives across borders, this programme directly supports contemporary creation and federates a vast community of artists, scientists and art professionals around crucial social, cultural and ecological issues linked to the Mediterranean.

  The Island Club is an independent non-profit space based in Cyprus, hosting exhibitions by local and international artists as well as film screenings, performances and readings.

  The Rijeka Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMSU), established in 1948, offers dedicated support for innovative approaches to accessing, producing, and presenting art. The museum structures its program around educational activities and various models for exhibiting visual arts. Its exhibition concepts address new discursive possibilities, creating a space for inspiration, idea exchange, and active participation. Under the banner of openness, creativity, and engagement, together with artistic, cultural, and social organizations, the museum promotes the exploration of visual arts, collaboration, and exchange both regionally and internationally. The museum's collection offers a diverse range of artistic visions with approximately 10,000 works of art from the late 19th century to the present day.
