Dino Zrnec

Dino Zrnec (*1983) born in Zagreb, Croatia, lives and works in Zagreb and Vienna.  He graduated from painting class at Academy of Fine Arts Zagreb as well as expanded pictorial space at Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and VSUP Prague. Since 2010, Zrnec has been exhibiting independently and has received several awards for his work, including the Audience Award at the Erste Fragments exhibition in 2010, the Croatian Association of Fine Artists Young Artist Award in 2011, and the Radoslav Putar Award in 2015. He has also participated in several residency programs both in Croatia and abroad.

His work has featured in solo and group exhibitions including the Skulpturinstitut, Vienna (2023), Industrial Art Biennial, Labin (2021), Technical Museum Nikola Tesla, Zagreb (2019), Museum of Contemporary art Zagreb (2016), Kunsthaus Graz project space (2014), Vin Vin gallery Vienna, Apoteka Vodnjan.

Working in the field of expanded, performative and process painting, Dino Zrnec deconstructs and delves into the veiled intricacies of the painting processes, its materials and tools. During his residency in Rijeka, assuming the role of an artist-curator, Zrnec will embark on an exploration of the museum's collection, contemplating the condition of the works held in the museum depot. Rather than fixating on individual works, his focus lies in scrutinizing the way artworks are being stored, with a particular interest in the technical aspects and materials involved in painting that extend beyond conventional historical and artistic classifications.

Frequently working in a series of paintings, Zrnec constructs his paintings following self-imposed rules. In the process of working on an art project, he places great importance on the space and the interplay between the artworks, the exhibition space, and the visitors. Zrnec's works and exhibition setups are born from, react to, or are created in dialogue with the surrounding space, the specifics of the architecture of exhibition and museum halls, depots, and other artworks. The museum’s collection, often concealed from public view in the absence of a permanent exhibition, is formally and conceptually re-evaluated by the artist-in-residence.

Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka (HR) - MMSU

MMSU in Rijeka founded in 1948, in its long tradition offers a committed support to innovative ways of approaching, producing and presenting art. From its very beginning the Museum has been building reputation of one of the most prominent visual art institutions in Croatia, entrusted with presentation of Croatian artists at prestigious international art events such as: Venice Biennial 1962, 1997, 2007, 2010, Sao Paolo Biennial 1967, 2004 etc. 

The Museum rounds its programming around visual art education, parallel to different modes of exhibition concepts that address new discursive possibilities and transform it into a place of inspiration, idea exchange and active participation. Under the motto openness, creativity & engagement, together with artistic, cultural and community organizations, Museum furthers visual arts research, collaboration and exchange within the region and internationally, while aspiring to reach increasingly diverse audiences and to work in a close relationship with the community.

Museum’s collection offers a diverse range of artistic visions with over 8,000 artworks dated from the end of the 19^th century to the present day. From 2017 Museum is located at new address, Krešimirova 26c, in ex-industrial complex Rikard Benčić. Since then, some important exhibitions were organized at MMSU in the framework of the pre-program and program of Rijeka 2020 - European Capital of Culture, i.e. Tomislav Gotovac: Crisis Anticipator - Don't Ask Where We're Going (2017), Vlado Martek: Exhibition with Many Titles and Goran Petercol: Don't Worry About Poetics, They Will Arrive on Their Own in 2019 and David Maljković: With the Collection in 2020..
