Aleksandra Mihajlovska is a professional actress currently working in the National Theater Kumanovo, Macedonia. Besides acting, she works in the field of applied theater and for the last two years she is a coordinator of the Youth Center Multi Kulti as part of the Center for Intercultural Dialogue, Kumanovo.

As an actress chosen to work in a state theater, she is grateful for the opportunity to experience playing in various productions on regular basis, which is extremely important for her professional development. But on the other side, she is present on the independent scene as well, and she strongly supports the development of the independent scene in the country, because that is the place for free experiments in terms of expression, use of space and post-dramatic theater concepts.

She believes in the power of theater outside the institutionalized theater and the impact it can have for social changes. As a youth worker and trainer she works internationally and locally in order to promote the use of theater tools in various social contexts. Multi Kulti, the youth center she works in, was created in 2010 in Kumanovo with a main aim to support the intercultural dialogue and acceptance in the ethnically segregated city. In the center different art and social workshops for kids and students are organized on regular basis with the use of non-formal education methods.

Besides acting and working in the youth center, she is currently ending her MA ( theater arts ) studies and works on her theses that has to do with the importance and recognition of applied theater methods in the formal education of actors in the country.
Applied Theatre Workshops

During the residency, Aleksandra Mihajlovska plans to implement series of educational workshops with children and adults as part of the Benčić Youth Council program called A Place for Me – A Place for Us. The workshops will use the techniques of applied theater that are used in particular during the introduction phase or while relaxing before the main activities of the workshop, but also to prepare for work, or after the main activities of the workshop in order to make a evaluation of the workshop easier. With adult learners Aleksandra will focus on sharing experiences that participants can apply in their work, and with children she will emphasize the importnace of using and experimenting with their own tools in different cultural environment. The method of applied theater is useful because it triggers a person both physically and mentally, and indirectly prepare and introduce them in the main activities.
Benčić Youth Council

Youth Council Benčić (VBM) is a project of Art Foundation Musagetes and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka. It is designed for children and young people and the development of their relationship with culture, cultural production and cultural institutions in the city. The project builds on previous success, a film project “Take Over Benčić” by Canadian artist Althea Thauberger which was attended by over 50 children from the city of Rijeka.

The main objective of this project is to bring the culture closer to children and young people as future consumers and carriers of that culture. Youth Council Benčić is an opportunity for children and young people to learn more about the resources that are necessary for the realization of cultural content and to familiarize themselves with cultural institutions and venues. Also, it is an opportunity to adapt to cultural spaces and learn to respond and design content adapted for children – to encourage them to think about the programs, way of thinking and politics that have to be adjusted accordingly. This project is designed for children and for cultural institutions in order to recognize the power and importance of children within the cultural dynamics of the city.

The mission of the Youth Council Benčić is cooperation and empowerment of children to learn, influence and create different forms of art and culture in their city. An important part of this process is the creation of opportunities for the expression of views, opinions and content produced by children. By reaching out to the public, the children directly affect the cultural dynamics of their city and take on the role of its active participants, creators and commentators.

Youth Council Benčić wants to lead by example and inspire other cultural stakeholders to cooperate and network so they can offer children through their unity and synergy a stimulating atmosphere and environment for high quality research of culture and the arts and for developing their own creativity.

Youth Council Benčić is a group of young people that learn, influence, create and test many forms of art in the city. They reveal and discuss art and culture.
